This place is supposed to be one of the best destinations for windsurfing or kite surfing. This is because of the strong, consistent wind in the area. That is also why a lot of world competitions were held in Cabarete. As more and more visitors starting going there for their vacations, Cabarete had no other choice but to develop itself to a tourist destination offering all types of entertainment to the visitors. 5 things to do in Cabarete:
-Even if you are an expert windsurfer or just a beginner that is the ideal destination where you can go and practice. With a wide beach and soft white sand, the coral reef-protected bay has ideal conditions for windsurfing. Windsurfers revel in progressive winds that pick up around noon with waves breaking from three to six feet high and only light currents. There are also quite a lot windsurfing schools offering lessons.
-It might cost you a bit more than staying in a hotel room,but renting an apartment by the sea is the best you can do in Cabarete. Breathtaking views as well as all the amenities that a luxurious type of accommodation can offer you will be your pay off.
-The Dominican Republic Jazz Festival is a festival full of rhythm, flavour, and colour. You should definitely not miss the opportunity to visit it,if you are planning to go to Cabaret the first week of October.
-The bay of the Cabarete is about two kilometres long. That makes it one of the longest stretches of uninterrupted sand beach in the Dominican Republic. You should definitely go for a walk during the afternoon or early in the morning.
- Although all the areas in Cabarete,are within walking distances, you could try to get a motoconcho to get from one place to another. Motoconcho is just a motorbike with a driver. It is cheap and I consider it as really enjoyable!
2 towns near Cabarete:
SOSUA: Sosua is a small town near by,that is worth being visited at least once during your stay in Cabarete. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Dominican Republic and one of the most chosen tourist destinations in the Caribean. Sosua offers to visitors a great variety of nightclubs, that is also why it is considered to be one of the top single male destinations. Of you are just looking to relax, swim or go out,then just organise a visit to Sosua.
PUERTO PLATA: The capital of the province of Puerto Plata, is the town Puerto Plata. This city counts about 130.000 citizens and it is mostly known for its sandy beaches. Relax with your family or friends and also do some water sports that are offered in most of the beached of Puerto Plata. Can you think of a better idea than doing some water skiing or banana boat ride during your vacation?
Tips when travelling to Cabarete:
-Do not forget to get a tourist card when you get there. It will cost you about $30.
-If you need to use public transport,you can choose either a Publicos that is a sedan car or a Guaguas that is a mini van.
-Buy some souvenirs to your friends. A really good idea is the mamajuana, it is a bottle with herbs and sticks that you fill with red wine, empty,and then fill it with rum and honey. It's for settling the stomach after dinner and makes a very cool addition to anyone's home bar.
-Dine at Blue Moon. It is a indian-domenican type of restaurant that will reward your choice with a romantic atmosphere and all the delicious dishes that you will order.
-With lots of second hand shops for kites, you can buy your equipment for very affordable prices.
-Organise a night out at one of the nightclubs that the area has to offer, and get yourself dancing salsa all night long while drinking local cocktails.
-Make sure you go for a Full Moon boat trip down the Yasica river.
-Restaurants can offer you a great variety of dishes to taste,you should however not forget to try fresh sea food.
-Go for horse riding in the evening to enjoy the sunset. It is amazing!
-It would be recommend to go to Cabarete from February until September. The water temperature though is about 27oC the whole year, so there is no point carrying your bulky wetsuit.
