Munich is the third biggest city in Germany with about 1,35 Million inhabitants. Being the capital of Bavaria which is one of the 16 federal states, it is also the seat of the government department of Upper Bavaria. It is located at the foothills of the Alps which offers a lot of possibilities to create your leisure time as the Alps are blessed with numerous beautiful lakes and of course mountains where you also will always be busy doing something especially in winter.
In summer you can take a swim in the “Isar”, the main river which is going through Munich. A little branch of the “Isar”, called “Eisbach” is famous for surfing as it produces high waves at one point. It is located in the “Englischer Garten”, one of the biggest intra-urban parks in the world, which invites you to relax and spend a good time in this beautiful surrounding area.
After the foundation in 1158 Munich was always involved in German history for example that almost 90 % of the historic centre of Munich was destroyed during World War II, but was then restored to its former glory with numerous historic buildings you shouldn’t miss to visit.
Munich is also famous for the world-wide known “Oktoberfest”, also called “Wiesn” in Bavarian dialect, which you should attend at least once in your life as you will get to know the Bavarian culture in all its splendour.
