Berlin
The city is one of the 16 states and builds the metropolis of Brandenburg. The town is the most populous one (3,4 millions habitants) in Germany. Berlin is divided in 12 districts and is crossed by the river Spree and Havel. While history passed the city state, it was often a capital after it was named diplomatic in the 13th century. Among others, the Kingdom of Prussia, the Holy Roman Empire and the GDR named it as their capital. Since the reunion on 3rd of October 1990, Berlin has been the capital of the state Germany and also harbours the seat of the German Federal Parliament, the federal president and the Federal Council. The metropolis Berlin counts as cosmopolitan city for culture, politics, media and sciences. It is also one of the most important European centres of communication and one of the most visited cities of the European continent. Berlin can be proud of its three global-known universities, “Freie Universität Berlin”, “Technische Universität” and “Humboldt-Universität Berlin”. Berlin’s sign is a standing black bear who is looking to the left and has red claws and a red tongue. The flag’s colours, red and white, symbolise the connections to the surrounding Brandenburg, as Berlin used to be a part of it before it became an own state.
