Toulon
Toulon is a provincial city situated on the south of France, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The town is located between sea and mountains and it offers many natural assets. Tourism, trade and government body are an important economic activity in the city.
Toulon harbour is one of the best natural anchorages on the Mediterranean and the city hosts the largest French military harbour: The Toulon Naval Base. The commercial harbour of Toulon was the first French seaport to service Corsica. In 2009, 1,152,054 passengers embarked from the Var, which represents nearly 40% of the traffic-Continent Corsica.
Toulon has also an aeroport with more then 500,000 passengers per year, and a university of sciences, social sciences, humanities and law.
I) Attractions to see in Toulon
1/Old Town
You can visit the old town, the historic centre located between the port and the Cours Lafayette, a pedestrian street with squares, fountains and narrow roads. You can see the Toulon Cathedral, at the end of this narrow street. My advice is to do the provincial market the morning on the Cours Lafayette where you can find delicious local products.
2/ Upper Town
You also can visit the Upper Town of Baron Haussmann, situated between the Boulevard de Strasbourg and the railway station, built in the 19th century.
Baron Haussmann began the project of the improvement of the town. Toulon Opera, Grand Hôtel, Place de la Liberté, the Gardens of Alexander I, Palais de Justice and the train station were improved.
3/Le Mourillon
You shouldn’t miss Le Mourillon ,situated in the east of Toulon, is a small and charming seaside . Le Mourillon is known for its small fishing port, next to the Fort Saint Louis. My advice is to visit Le Mourillon in the end of the summer, maybe in September, you will enjoy it peacefully.
4/Mount Faron
You should not miss the Mount Faron either which dominates the city of Toulon, you can reach the top by a cable car from Toulon. You will find a 1944 Allied memorial at the top.
