Nice
Nice is also named “Nice La Belle”. Thanks to its beauty it is always worth to visit this city in the south of France at the Cote d’Azur. It is the 5th largest city of France with about 350,000 inhabitants and is assumed to be one of the oldest human settlements in the whole world. After it belonged to Italy it became a part of France in 1860 but was already founded in 350 BC.
Over the years Nice has become a cosmopolitan, vibrating city with a natural beauty at the same time and casts a spell over everybody with its Mediterranean flair. Also many famous painters like Henri Matisse or Nici de SaintPhalle were inspired by the soft light and clean air in Nice. The city is very modern with many cultural activities such as exhibitions, congresses, festivals or other events like the “Nice Jazz Festival” but does not loose its tradition on the other hand. For example the famous carnival which takes place once a year and also the scenic historic city centre with its lively small alleys and the beautiful old harbour. You also should not miss to try the typical southern French Mediterranean cuisine as it always is a culinary delight. Furthermore Nice is divided into three districts. The historic city in the east with the harbour, the new city with its numerous villas and the exclusive district in the northern middle called Cimiez.
You shouldn’t miss to visit old Nice, especially on hot summer days. Thanks to the old buildings the channels are shady and algid. Old Nice is the historic part of the city and invites you to stroll through various colourful markets with flowers, vegetables, fish, spicery and other groceries. Moreover there are numerous shops and coffee bars. Culturally interested guests should pay a visit to “Palais Lascaris”, an outstanding example for baroque era. Another eye-catcher is the “L’Eglise Russe”, a Russian church which leaves a majestic impression with its six onion domes. Another hotspot which Nice is famous for is the “Promenade des Anglais”, a six kilometre long promenade with an awesome view over the ocean and lined with palm trees. It starts at “Colline du Chateau”, which you definitely should not miss to visit as well as it is the castle-mountain high above the city that rewards an exhausting but exciting climb (you also have the opportunity to take a lift) with a breathtaking view over Nice. On the top you can watch the ruins of the former castle. Likewise worth a visit for cultural interested is the “Musee Matisse”, a museum dedicated to the outstanding artist Henri Matisse who spent the longest time of his life in Nice. To relax a bit you should go to the beach, which is also a wonderful opportunity to finalise your day with an unforgettable view over the sparkling blue Mediterranean.
